Many organisations are migrating services to AWS, or planning to offer additional services in AWS.

The design of the AWS service itself is critical to the success of these projects.

Our experienced AWS solution architects analyse the business and technical requirements and then develop a design, or range of designs, to meet those requirements and deliver a comprehensive Amazon Well-Architected review.

Of course, there is seldom one solution to any challenge and we work closely with our clients to develop a solution that fully meets their needs.

In addition to the design, if required, our AWS architecture consulting team can implement the design, again using best practice principles.
Business Requirements
Clients select StableLogic for AWS architecture consulting projects for many reasons, including as part of a cloud migration or because of challenges with an existing design, for example costs being higher than they expected.

Common business drivers for the review include:

- Cost
- Security
- Poor Performance
- Backup and resilience
- Scalability

We start the Well-Architected review by understanding the business requirements in detail. As a consultancy with over 30 years experience, we truly understand the importance of delivering against business objectives.
Process
AWS's Well-Architected Framework (WAF) is a strong baseline against which to both design and review workloads in AWS. The objective is to consider all of the different aspects of performance, against the 5 pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, and Cost Optimisation.

Our AWS Solution Architects work with clients to complete the Amazon Well-Architected review and to develop future designs. On some occasions, there are trade-offs, for example, availability vs cost. We explore each of these options, model the costs and benefits, and present them to our client to make decisions.

At the end of the process, we deliver a full business case and a detailed design.
Evaluate
Our evaluation phase considers the new design, or an existing design in AWS, against the Well-Architected framework and considers options for improvement.

Our AWS architecture consulting team provide a report, detailing our findings and outlining options for improvement.
Implement
If required, our AWS Engineers can implement the recommended solution in AWS. This typically comprises developing the infrastructure as code in the client's preferred platform, e.g. Terraform.

"As the number of AWS options grow, and the complexity of the services increases, a strong base design becomes every more critical. Without a strong design, the benefits of the cloud are lost."

⸻  FAQs

What is the AWS Well-Architected framework?

The AWS Well-Architected Framework is a comprehensive set of best practices and guidelines designed to help organisations build secure, high-performing, resilient, and efficient infrastructure on AWS. It is structured around five key pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, and Cost Optimisation.

Each pillar focuses on different aspects of architecture and provides principles and best practices to ensure that your AWS environment is robust and aligned with your business goals. At StableLogic, we use the AWS Well-Architected Framework to guide our clients in designing and implementing cloud solutions that meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency, ensuring long-term success and stability.

How do I design an AWS infrastructure?
Designing an AWS infrastructure involves a strategic approach to ensure it is secure, efficient, and aligned with your business objectives. From our experience in AWS architecture consulting, we recommend the following steps:

1. Define Your Requirements: Start by clearly defining your business needs and objectives. Understand the specific workloads, applications, and data requirements that will be hosted on AWS.

2. Architect for the AWS Well-Architected Framework: Use the AWS Well-Architected Framework as a guide. Ensure your design adheres to the five pillars: Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, and Cost Optimisation.

3. Select the Appropriate AWS Services: Choose the AWS services that best fit your needs. This may include EC2 for compute resources, RDS for managed databases, S3 for scalable storage, and VPC for network configuration.

4. Design for Scalability and Flexibility: Ensure your infrastructure can scale to accommodate growth. Use Auto Scaling to adjust resources automatically and design stateless applications to make scaling easier.

5. Implement Security Best Practices: Security is paramount. Use IAM to manage access, implement encryption for data at rest and in transit, and configure security groups and network ACLs to control traffic.

6. Optimise for Performance and Cost: Monitor and optimise performance using CloudWatch. Use tools like AWS Cost Explorer to keep track of costs and implement cost-saving measures, such as Reserved Instances and Spot Instances.

7. Plan for Backup and Disaster Recovery: Implement a robust backup and disaster recovery strategy using services like AWS Backup and AWS CloudFormation to automate recovery processes.

8. Automate and Manage Infrastructure: Use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like AWS CloudFormation or Terraform to automate the deployment and management of your infrastructure, ensuring consistency and repeatability.

By following these steps, you can design an AWS infrastructure that is robust, scalable, secure, and cost-effective. StableLogic can assist you throughout this process, leveraging our expertise to ensure your AWS environment is optimally designed to meet your business needs.
