Effective allocation of AWS costs have huge benefits to an organisation.

In addition to effective project level cost control, it is possible to manage growth, calculate returns, allocate cost by service user and gain valuable business insight.

But AWS bills themselves are large, very complex and almost impossible to effectively allocate on their own.

StableLogic has a structured and consultative approach to enabling AWS customers with advanced cost allocation, measurement, and accountability practices. Drawing from our expertise in cloud financial management and FinOps, we help clients gain full visibility into their AWS spend, enabling cost transparency, governance, and optimisation at every layer.

 Gain AWS cost clarity

 Boost cloud efficiency

 Drive cost ownership

 Enable smart allocation

 Improve cloud governance

 Optimise every dollar

The key to mature FinOps capabilities is combining AWS-native tools with proven processes and cost management practices.

We empower teams to take ownership of their cloud costs, improve operational efficiency, and drive business-aligned cloud spending through comprehensive cost visibility and accountability.

With clear insights and structured governance, we help transform cloud spend from a challenge into a strategic advantage.

Filtering and Grouping of All AWS Costs

StableLogic supports customers in implementing detailed AWS cost segmentation by:

  • Enabling allocation by AWS Organisation, account structure, resource types, and tags (business units, environments, applications, teams, etc.).
  • Defining and applying AWS Cost Categories, allowing customers to group resources across accounts and services into logical business groupings.
  • Segmenting costs by AWS Region, linked accounts, and specific service usage types using AWS Cost Explorer, Budgets, and Cost Anomaly Detection.
  • Ensuring customers have the right tagging strategy and enforcement in place for effective ongoing cost allocation.

We guide customers through best practices for tagging policies and help implement governance mechanisms to ensure tag coverage and consistency across the AWS environment.

Creation of Unit Economics

StableLogic assists customers in developing unit economics models, allowing them to:

  • Attribute AWS spend to meaningful business metrics (e.g., cost per customer, cost per transaction, or cost per workload).
  • Combine CUR (Cost and Usage Report) data with application or business metadata to build KPIs that track efficiency, profitability, and scaling behaviour.
  • Use this information to inform pricing models, internal chargebacks, or forecasting processes.

Our consultants work closely with finance and engineering stakeholders to define what unit metrics are most valuable and ensure alignment with business outcomes.

Shared Service Cost Allocation

There are often shared services such as monitoring within the AWS account which can’t be allocated to any single project or cost centre.

StableLogic provides expertise in allocating shared services (e.g., VPC, Direct Connect, backup systems, central logging) by:

  • Implementing cost-sharing models using AWS cost allocation tags and Cost Categories.
  • Supporting proportional cost splitting or fixed allocation models, based on resource usage or custom business rules.
  • Leveraging custom CUR queries or tools like Athena, QuickSight, or external platforms (e.g., Apptio, CloudHealth) to track shared usage and apply appropriate splits.

We also help customers document and communicate cost allocation strategies internally, improving transparency and accountability across teams.

CUR Integration and Granular Reporting

StableLogic provides hands-on support to integrate and use the AWS Cost and Usage Report (CUR), helping customers:

  • Set up CUR delivery to Amazon S3 and configure Athena/Glue for querying.
  • Customise dashboards using CUDOS, Cost Intelligence Dashboards, or integrate with BI tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Enable scheduled reporting and cost trend analysis across dimensions like service, account, region, tag, or usage type.

We also assist customers in setting up alerts, anomaly detection, and budget tracking to ensure cost governance policies are adhered to.

"AWS cost allocation isn’t just a financial exercise—it’s a strategic enabler. By turning complex billing data into clear, actionable insights, we help organisations take control of their cloud spend and align it with real business outcomes."

⸻  FAQs

Why is AWS cost allocation important for my organisation?
AWS bills are notoriously complex. Without proper allocation, it's nearly impossible to understand where your cloud spend is going or how to optimise it. With structured cost allocation, you gain clarity, accountability, and the power to make smarter business decisions.
What tools and methods do you use to allocate AWS costs?

We combine AWS-native tools like Cost Explorer, Cost Categories, and the Cost and Usage Report (CUR) with best-practice tagging strategies and governance processes. We also support advanced reporting and custom models using Athena, QuickSight, and external platforms like Apptio or CloudHealth.

Can you help us allocate costs for shared AWS services?

Yes—we specialise in it. Whether it’s VPCs, backup systems, or monitoring tools, we design cost-sharing models tailored to your business. From proportional splits to fixed allocations, we ensure shared costs are transparent, fair, and aligned with your governance strategy.
