Cloud Strategy

Supporting Clients Develop their Cloud Strategy

Organisations across the world are moving to a wide variety of cloud services.  As a result, many of these organisations are benefiting from

  • Cost efficiencies – derived from consolidating legacy infrastructure
  • Business enablement – cloud services are inherently flexible and can be scaled to meet changing business requirements
  • Functionality and reliability – improved performance profile for key applications via dedicated private connections to a variety of cloud services
  • Increased Security – enables the growing trend in mobile/remote workers to have secure access to business applications at any time on any device

However, moving to the cloud without careful planning can result in additional costs, risks and service failures.

Challenges with Moving to the Cloud

Understanding the options – we are bombarded by choice when looking a cloud services options. From SaaS to IaaS to PaaS and a plethora of options and variations within, making sense of it all sometimes and imposing task.

Security and Compliance –  an inescapable reality of cloud services is that there will always be some data or applications that organisations will not be comfortable with moving to a multi-tenanted environment. Generally, when a need such as this exists the market responds accordingly and this is no exception. The range of vendors vying for competitive differentiation in this space is great, some will do it well and others won’t.

Availability and Reliability – as with security, availability and reliability reside in the realm of the service provider. There is no question that delivering on a robust SLA requires a commitment to best practice, a thoroughly redundant architecture and 24/7/365 staffing by trained and experience technicians.

Vendor Lock-in –  Ensuring data portability is essential, as is understanding the data ownership and retrieval policies of the provider.

Loss of Control – the thought of moving away from an infrastructure model that has historically been owned and managed by an organisation to a managed service model often carries with it an emotional response and thus entrusting a third party to be a responsible, honest and reliable business partner can be a point of friction in many organisations.
